Information Literacy Programmes and Library Training

OzU Library offers a rich selection of training and seminars at different levels to its patrons in order to support education, teaching, and research. Library training programs are designed in cooperation with academic staff and are well-integrated into curricula to support the University’s academic programs. Training and seminar programs are delivered by reference specialists. The Library offers the following training and seminar programs: 
Basic Library Training
These training programs are engineered taking into account the needs of newly joined faculty members, instructors, master’s students, PhD students, and administrative staff.  Prior to each training program, a “welcome email” is sent to faculty members to become better acquainted with them and their research interests. Training is delivered in English or Turkish depending on the individuals’ needs. The content of training may cover the following topics:
  • Introduction of library services and facilities, 
  • How to use the library catalogue
  • How to access the databases and data sets offered by the Library
  • Library tour
ScOLa Library Training
These are the training programs designed for newly-admitted ScOLa (preparatory program) students and newly-matriculated freshman students. Training is delivered in English or Turkish on the individuals’ needs. The content of training may cover the following topics:
  • Introduction of library services and facilities, 
  • How to use the library catalogue
  • Library tour
SEC 101 Library Training
These are the training programs offered within the scope of SEC 101. Students who take the SEC 101 course may attend these training program to collect points. The training programs cover the topics listed below. The content of training may cover the following topics:
  • Googling or Evaluating Online Resources: This training program offers useful tips to help participants evaluate big online data and internet sites that contain them. The program illustrates the evaluation criteria for online resources based on examples, and entails their practical application.
  • Use But Not Steal: This training program covers the concept of plagiarism, making use of a variety of examples. The importance of citation in the academia is explained within the framework of ethics and copyrights.
Couse-Specific Library Training
This training program is designed to offer information about how to use the library’s databases and research tools for research projects and assignments required by specific courses. The training program is planned in collaboration with academic staff. The content of training is identified based on the existing needs. Training is delivered in English or Turkish depending on the needs. The content of training may cover the following topics:
  • Market analysis, sectoral reports and analysis, company information, country reports
  • How to use specific databases for assignments and projects
  • How to use research tools (oZooGle+, catalogue search and Journal Portal)
  • Browsing techniques such as “keyword searching” and “subject browsing” and advanced article browsing
  • How to download e-books or use them online
  • How to use research analysis and trend tools (Scival, InCites)
  • Resource management tools and academic writing skills (Endnote, Mendeley)
  • How to develop references and give citations
