Mechanical Engineering Research Laboratories

Mechanical Engineering Research Laboratories

Manufacturing Technologies Laboratory

This lab aims to teach students about current manufacturing methods employed by Mechanical Engineers. The lab will also allow students to manufacture the parts and products they design for their future projects and experiments in the following years of their education. In the order of importance, the lab features a milling machine, a turning lathe, a drill, an electric arc welding and a tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding machine. When necessary this lab will also be utilized to manufacture the parts and apparatus required for research projects. This lab will be used starting from the first year.

Mechanics Laboratory

The objective of this lab is to teach students about measurement methods for the basic mechanical, electrical and thermal system parameters used in Mechanical Engineering. Students will study in groups of two or three in this laboratory. The lab will offer a comprehensive range of equipments including sufficient number of computers for measurement, experimental platforms and fasteners, calipers, micrometers, multimeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, power supplies, strain gauges, basic electric and electronic circuit elements, (resistance, condenser, transistor, thyristor, diac, triac, ADC, DAC, OPAMP, potentiometer, photodiode etc), as well as instruments and devices such as breadboards, thermocouples, manometers, thermometers, hygrometers, load cells, digital coders, flowmeters, and gas emission meters etc.

Material Science and Technologies Laboratory

This lab will provide an introduction for the basic devices and machines used in material characterization and testing. The lab will contain a hydraulic testing equipment, a fatigue testing equipment, as well as Vickers, Brinell and Rockwell hardness testers. This lab will be used in the third year.

Energy Technologies Laboratory

This lab aims to teach students about the basics of flow. To this end, the lab will contain experimental setups to enable measurement of the flow rate, speed and pressure of incompressible flows. The lab will also serve to experimentally reinforce learning of heat transfer through conduction, convection and radiation. For this purpose the lab will house a separate experimental setup for conductive, natural and forced convection, and radiative heat transfer. Students will use this lab in their third year.
